Ithaca by ferry

Ithaca is the legendary home of Odysseus: a small, green and peaceful island of olive groves, cypress trees and deep bays. Its capital Vathy lies at the end of one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and the villages of Kioni and Frikes have small harbours with tavernas by the water.

Ferries leave Patras on some days (about 4 hours, from €15.40) and arrive at Pisaetos on the west coast. The shortest crossing is from Sami on Kefalonia, about 20 minutes, from €4.50 (October 2026).

Stay in Vathy

The capital, with the most rooms, tavernas and shops, around a deep sheltered bay.

Stay in the north

Kioni and Frikes are small fishing harbours, quieter and very pretty.

Ferry routes & prices

Ferries to Ithaca arrive at Pisaetos, a small port on the west coast facing Kefalonia. The easiest way is via Kefalonia (Kyllini–Poros, then a short drive to Sami), or directly from Patras on the days the ferry runs.

Leaving from the mainland

Kyllini

A small port in the western Peloponnese, about 290 km from Athens (3½–4 hours by car). Ferries to Poros (Kefalonia) and Zakynthos leave all day.

Patras

The big port of western Greece, about 2½ hours from Athens by car or bus. Ferries to Sami (Kefalonia) and Ithaca leave from the south port.

At the port

Be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, or an hour with a vehicle, especially in August.

On the island

From the port

There is no village at Pisaetos: book a taxi or rent a car in advance, or bring your own car on the ferry.

Getting around

Ithaca is small but hilly. A car or scooter lets you reach the northern villages and the small beaches; taxis are few.

Flying

Ithaca has no airport. The nearest is on Kefalonia, near Argostoli.

Boat trips

Water taxis and small boats from Vathy reach beaches that cannot be reached by road.

Campers, vans & vehicles

Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Ithaca? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.

1

Measure and declare

Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.

2

Gas and fuel

Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.

3

At the port

Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.

4

On board

Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.

5

Boat on a trailer

Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.

On Ithaca: wild camping is not allowed in Greece. The ferries from Sami and Patras carry cars and vans; the roads are narrow, so big campers should check their route first.
