Kythira by ferry

Kythira lies off the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Ionian and the Aegean. Its white Chora sits below a Venetian castle with views over the bay of Kapsali, and the island is greener than you would expect, with the waterfall of Neraida near Mylopotamos, stone bridges and more than 60 villages.

Seajets sails from Piraeus overnight in about 6 h 30 m, from €21.50, and from Gythio in about 2 h 30 m, from €10 (October 2026). Ferries arrive at Diakofti on the east coast.

Stay in Chora or Kapsali

Below the castle and by the double bay of Kapsali, in the south.

Leaving from Piraeus or Gythio

From Piraeus

The Seajets ferry leaves Piraeus in the evening and arrives early the next morning. Blue Star shows your gate when you check in; Seajets usually leaves from E9 or E7.

From Gythio

Gythio is in the southern Peloponnese, about 4 hours by car from Athens. The crossing to Kythira takes about 2 h 30 m.

At the port

Be at the quay 30–45 minutes before departure, or an hour with a vehicle.

On the island

From the port

There is little public transport: rent a car or book a taxi before you arrive.

Getting around

Kythira is big, with villages and beaches far apart; a car is essential.

Flying

Kythira has a small airport with flights from Athens.

Antikythera

Some ferries continue to the tiny island of Antikythera and Crete.

Campers, vans & vehicles

Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Kythira? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.

1

Measure and declare

Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.

2

Gas and fuel

Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.

3

At the port

Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.

4

On board

Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.

5

Boat on a trailer

Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.

On Kythira: wild camping is not allowed in Greece. A car is essential on this large island; bring yours on the ferry from Piraeus or Gythio.
