Skiathos by ferry

Skiathos is the liveliest of the Sporades: a green island covered in pine forest, with more than 60 sandy beaches, among them the famous Koukounaries and Lalaria, with its white pebbles and rock arch. Its harbour town climbs two hills, with the church of Trion Ierarchon on top and a busy old port below.

Boats leave Volos every day: Seajets ferries take about 2 h 25 m – 2 h 30 m, from €36.70, and the Aegean Flying Dolphins fast boat about 1 h 25 m, from €45 (October 2026). From Skiathos the same boats continue to Skopelos and Alonissos.

Stay in Skiathos town

Around the harbour: tavernas, bars, the bus to the beaches and boat trips all start here.

Stay by a beach

The south coast road links the town with Troulos, Koukounaries and dozens of sandy coves.

Ferry routes & prices

All boats to Skiathos leave from Volos on the mainland: Seajets ferries, which carry cars, and the faster Aegean Flying Dolphins, for passengers only. In summer there are more sailings, and boats also cross from Mantoudi in northern Evia.

Leaving from Volos

Getting to Volos

Volos is about 330 km from Athens, 3½–4 hours by car on the motorway, or by KTEL bus from Athens (Liossion bus station). Thessaloniki is about 2½ hours away.

At the port

The boats leave from the town harbour of Volos, in the centre. Be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, or an hour with a vehicle.

Flying

Skiathos has an airport with flights from Athens and, in summer, from all over Europe; from there, boats continue to Skopelos and Alonissos.

On the island

Can I walk from the port?

Yes. The town and many hotels are a short walk from the quay; the beaches are a bus ride away.

Buses

A bus runs along the south coast from the town to Koukounaries, stopping at numbered stops at every beach; it is frequent in summer.

Car or scooter

Rental offices are in the town. The north coast is quieter, with dirt roads to some beaches.

Boat trips

Boats leave the old port for Lalaria, the sea caves and the islets around Skiathos.

Campers, vans & vehicles

Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Skiathos? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.

1

Measure and declare

Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.

2

Gas and fuel

Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.

3

At the port

Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.

4

On board

Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.

5

Boat on a trailer

Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.

On Skiathos: wild camping is not allowed in Greece. The Seajets ferries from Volos carry cars and small campers; the island has one main coast road, and parking near the beaches is tight in August.
