Skopelos by ferry

Skopelos is the greenest island in the Aegean, covered in pine forest and orchards, with beautiful beaches and a harbour town of white houses and grey slate roofs. The chapel of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, on a rock above the sea, became famous worldwide from the film Mamma Mia!.

Boats leave Volos every day: Aegean Flying Dolphins in about 1 h 55 m – 2 h 35 m, from €50, and Seajets ferries in about 3 h 20 m – 4 h 05 m, from €43.70, calling at Skiathos (October 2026). Skopelos has two ports: Skopelos town and Glossa (Loutraki) in the north-west.

Leaving from Volos

Getting to Volos

Volos is about 330 km from Athens, 3½–4 hours by car on the motorway, or by KTEL bus from Athens (Liossion bus station). Thessaloniki is about 2½ hours away.

At the port

The boats leave from the town harbour of Volos, in the centre. Be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, or an hour with a vehicle.

Flying

Skiathos has an airport with flights from Athens and, in summer, from all over Europe; from there, boats continue to Skopelos and Alonissos.

On the island

Can I walk from the port?

Yes, in Skopelos town the quay is in the centre. From Loutraki, take a bus or taxi up to Glossa or across the island.

Buses

A bus crosses the island between Skopelos town and Glossa, stopping near the main beaches.

Car or scooter

A car or scooter is the best way to reach the beaches and the Agios Ioannis chapel; rental offices are in the town.

Boat trips

Boats leave Skopelos town for the marine park of Alonissos, where you may see dolphins.

Campers, vans & vehicles

Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Skopelos? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.

1

Measure and declare

Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.

2

Gas and fuel

Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.

3

At the port

Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.

4

On board

Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.

5

Boat on a trailer

Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.

On Skopelos: wild camping is not allowed in Greece. The Seajets ferries from Volos carry cars and small campers. The roads are narrow and winding; park outside Skopelos town, whose centre is closed to cars.
