The island of Navagio

Zakynthos, also called Zante, is the southernmost of the main Ionian islands and one of the greenest in Greece. It is famous for Navagio, the shipwreck beach under white cliffs, for the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, and for the loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Laganas Bay, a national marine park.

Ferries to Zakynthos do not leave from Athens but from Kyllini, a small port in the western Peloponnese, about 3½–4 hours by road from Athens. Levante Ferries sails four or more times a day, all year, in about 1 h 15 m, from €13.50 per person and €38.40 for a car (October 2026).

Stay in Zakynthos town

The port town, with the ferry quay, Solomos Square, shops, buses and car rental.

Stay by the beach

Tsilivi in the north-east, Laganas for nightlife, or Keri and Limni Keriou in the quieter south.

Ferry routes & prices

The only ferry to Zakynthos is the Kyllini – Zakynthos crossing, run by Levante Ferries all year. The ships carry cars, motorbikes, campers and trucks, and in summer there are up to seven sailings a day. In August, book vehicles early.

Arriving & getting around

Where does the ferry arrive?

Ferries from Kyllini arrive in Zakynthos town, the island’s capital, on the east coast. The port is in the centre, so shops, hotels and car rental are close by.

The first ferry back to Kyllini leaves very early in the morning, which helps if you are driving on to Athens the same day.

Getting to Kyllini

By car

About 290 km from Athens on the motorway via Patras, 3½–4 hours. Leave time to queue at the port with a car in summer.

By bus

KTEL buses from Athens (Kifissos bus station) go all the way to Zakynthos town: the bus boards the ferry at Kyllini. Buy the ferry ticket with the bus ticket or from us.

Flying to Zakynthos

Zakynthos airport is about 5 km from the town, with flights from Athens and, in summer, from all over Europe.

On the island

Can I walk from the port?

Yes. The ferry docks in Zakynthos town, next to Solomos Square and the seafront.

Getting around

Buses run from the town to Tsilivi, Laganas, Kalamaki and other resorts. To reach Navagio viewpoint, the Blue Caves and the west coast, a car or scooter is best.

Boat trips

Boats to Navagio and the Blue Caves leave from Agios Nikolaos in the north and from Zakynthos town; boats to Marathonisi (turtle island) leave from Laganas Bay.

Campers, vans & vehicles

Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Zakynthos? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.

1

Measure and declare

Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.

2

Gas and fuel

Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.

3

At the port

Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.

4

On board

Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.

5

Boat on a trailer

Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.

On Zakynthos: wild camping is not allowed in Greece. You can park a camper wherever car parking is allowed, but setting up camp (awning, table, chairs) outside a campsite can be fined. The turtle-nesting beaches of the marine park have special rules: no vehicles on the sand and no access at night in summer. The ferry from Kyllini is short and runs all year, so Zakynthos is easy with a camper.
