Andros is the northernmost and one of the largest Cyclades, and it surprises everyone who expects bare rock: it has springs, streams, plane trees and terraced valleys, crossed by a network of marked hiking trails. Its capital, Chora, is an elegant town of sea captains’ mansions with fine museums, including a well-known museum of modern art, and the Tourlitis lighthouse standing on a rock in the sea. The coast has more than 50 beaches, many of them wild and quiet, such as the famous rock pillar of Tis Grias to Pidima.
Andros is the closest Cycladic island to Athens: ferries leave Rafina every day of the year and take about 1 hour on the fast Seajets boat or about 2 hours on a conventional ferry. It is a favourite weekend island for Athenians, so book ahead for Friday and Sunday sailings.
Batsi, 15 minutes from the port, is the liveliest resort, with a sandy beach and tavernas; Gavrio is the port village itself.
The capital on the east coast, about 45 minutes by car from the port, with museums, mansions and quiet beaches nearby.
Ferries to Andros leave from Rafina, not Piraeus. Three companies sail every day: Seajets with a fast morning boat (about 1 hour) and slower boats, and Golden Star and Fast Ferries with conventional ferries that carry cars and campers. The cheapest fare we found was the afternoon Seajets boat, €19.70.

| From | Companies | Fastest | Fares from | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rafina | Seajets, Golden Star Ferries, Fast Ferries | 1 h | €19.70 | All year, several a day |
| Tinos | Seajets, Golden Star Ferries, Fast Ferries, Blue Star Ferries | 50 min | €7.50 | All year |
| Mykonos | Seajets, Golden Star Ferries, Fast Ferries | 1 h 15 m | €21 | All year |

The Rafina ferries continue from Andros to Tinos and Mykonos, so it is easy to add Andros to the start or end of a Cyclades trip (October 2026 figures).
All ferries arrive at Gavrio, a small port village on the west coast. Chora, the capital, is on the east coast, about 45 minutes away by car, so plan your transfer if you are staying there.
Ferries are busiest on Friday evenings out of Rafina and Sunday afternoons back to Athens.

Rafina is a small port about 30 minutes from Athens airport, with buses from the city centre and the airport. You walk from the bus to the ferry in a few minutes; be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, or earlier with a vehicle.
Conventional ferries that carry cars, campers and vans, with morning and evening departures every day. On Friday evenings and summer weekends, book vehicles early.

Yes, into Gavrio village. Batsi is about 8 km away and Chora about 35 km, on the other side of the island.
Buses meet many ferries and run from Gavrio to Batsi and Chora. Taxis wait at the port, but there are few, so book ahead for early or late ferries.
Andros is big and mountainous: a car is the best way to see it. Rental offices are in Gavrio and Batsi, or bring your own car on the ferry from Rafina.
Andros has a network of marked, well-kept walking paths between villages, springs and beaches. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking.
Andros has no airport. Fly to Athens and take a ferry from Rafina, about 30 minutes from the airport.
Taking a camper, motorhome, van or your boat on a trailer to Andros? Big vehicles need a little more planning on Greek ferries. Here is what to know, for holidays and for business.
Give the exact length and height of your camper, van or car with caravan, including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. The ferry fare and deck space depend on them, and a vehicle bigger than booked may be refused or charged extra at the port.
Vehicles running on LPG or other gas, and hybrid or electric vehicles, must be declared when you book. Gas tanks may be filled to no more than 50% and EV batteries charged to no more than 40%. Make sure gas bottles are turned off before boarding.
Be at the port at least 1 hour before departure. Large vehicles are loaded in the order set by the port authority, so arriving early helps. Book well ahead in July and August: garage space for big vehicles runs out first.
Only the driver stays with the vehicle to drive it on and off; everyone else boards on foot. Nobody may stay in the vehicle during the crossing, so take what you need for the trip with you.
Taking your own boat? We also book ferry tickets for a car towing a boat trailer. Give the total length of car, trailer and boat together, and the height of the boat on the trailer, including any mast, frame or outboard engine.
Vans carrying goods, tools or equipment for work may be booked as commercial vehicles, with a different fare and different paperwork from a private car. Tell us what the vehicle carries and its weight.
Several vehicles and drivers on the same sailing, or regular crossings for a project? We book them together so your team travels on the same ship.
Length, height and weight decide the category. Include racks, ladders and trailers, and tell us if anything is loaded on the roof.
Commercial vehicles may need to be at the port earlier than cars. We confirm the exact check-in time and gate for your sailing.
Travelling for work? We issue an invoice in your company’s name. Send us the company name, address and VAT number with your quote request.
Andros has beaches on every coast, many reached by dirt roads or footpaths, and a capital worth a full day.
A sandy cove with a tall rock pillar standing in turquoise water.
A long, wild beach in a green valley, one of the most beautiful on the island.
Marble lanes, the archaeological museum, modern art and the Tourlitis lighthouse.

Andros is calm. Batsi has the most bars and waterfront tavernas, and Chora has cafés on its marble main street and in the square by the sea. Expect long dinners and quiet nights rather than clubs.
